The Robert Watson-Watt Society of Brechin is pushing ahead with
the campaign to erect a permanent memorial within the Ancient
City and Royal Burgh of Brechin, to commemorate his life and
work.
The Monument Project is being entirely funded by voluntary contributions, local fund
raising, supporters and donations by our website visitors.
Planning Stage - Start to Finish
The Society are aware of the unique historical importance of the Ancient City &
Royal Burgh of Brechin and as such we are working in close liaison with advisor’s
from the Angus district Council, to ensure the final design meets rigorous
conservation, design and safety criteria. We are looking forward to having the
finished monument located here in the centre of Watson-Watts birthplace – We are
certain it will prove a very suitable addition to our collection of artwork and exhibits
in and around Brechin currently.
We also believe that this monument will provided an added attraction of historical
interest to visitors combined with our expectations for an interactive display detailing
the journey of RADAR and especially the work achieved by Sir Robert Watson-Watt
and his team which assisted the RAF in winning the battle of Britain.
The Society have developed a Master schedule and budget for expected completion
of the Monument which details the activities involved in the process and the
expected costs from design to installation. However, this great plan will only be
realised in-line with the kind donations and funding received from our supporters
and generous sponsors.

Monument Evaluation Stage - Design to Installation
The evaluation of the monument has been detailed and rigorous in order to give
due consideration to traditional and modern interpretation of the Societies brief.
During this evaluation period several styles and configurations were given
extensive scrutiny by the committee and our advisor’s which resulted in the
selection of the following traditional styled Monument highlighting the relationship
of Watson-Watt with the RAF and the Home Chain RADAR stations.
The Final Selected Design : By Alan Beattie Herriot
Donations in Kind :
Materials, Labour or Equipment
We are interested in pursuing
opportunities where suppliers,
individuals or companies can provide
us with donations such as materials or
equipment we require for the
construction of the monument or
labour to assist with the installation at
the site in Brechin.
Our goal from the start is to be
environmentally aware during the
execution of this project and where
possible utilise certain recycled
materials in order to add value to the
project cost and where
possible reduce the
impact at site.
Our project needs are :
Foundation work
Rental of a digger
Rental of scaffolding/fencing
Landscaping services
Crane hire
Transport the Monument to Brechin

The final details will be developed with Alan and incorporated in the final scheme. Consideration will also be given to utilising, where
practicable, recycled materials which will be explored with Alan on certain aspects of the Monuments design.
Alan Beattie Herriot is undoubtedly one of Britain’s finest and most successful public sculptors. His distinctive monumental works in
bronze appear throughout Scotland, England, France and the Netherlands and yet most people outside the art cognoscenti have almost
certainly never heard of him. Which suits Alan Herriot just fine.
For over 20 years he has been making sculptural figures for the major Heritage Conservation bodies, the National Trust for Scotland
and Historic Scotland as well as for organisations and individuals in Britain and Ireland, Holland and France.
His Ancient Mariner and Yankee Jack sculptures are sited at the Maritime Museum in Watchet, Somerset. A larger than life-size
Highland Division Piper is sited at House of Bruar, Perthshire. HRH Prince Andrew, the Duke of York unveiled the bronze memorial to
Bamse, the WWII Norwegian sea dog at Montrose. He is currently working on a large equestrian bronze statue of Robert the Bruce, to
be sited in Aberdeen.
